Are technology innovations like phones, messengers, and social media apps making us less human?

“I’m a great believer that any tool that enhances communication has profound effects in terms of how people can learn from each other, and how they can achieve the kind of freedoms that they’re interested in.” -quotes Bill Gates.

And I totally agree with his ideology; communication is indeed an essential element of the society. It is the exchange of opinions, enabling one to think about a certain issue which might seem conflicting. Every individual has his/her own perspective, communication encourages the sharing and discussion of these perspectives and based on them facts are constructed.

We all know how technology has evolved and so I shall rather not talk about the evolution of communication from letters to E-mails, Facebook, Skype, FaceTime etc. Advances in technology have undoubtedly influenced the way we communicate with each other. It has certainly played an important role in strengthening personal relationships, because these innovations have made it very easier to connect to someone across the globe. It has simplified the task of business personnel too, as it becomes easier to go about the necessary promotions, communication with clients everywhere etc.,

But, like two faces of a coin, there lies a drawback in this scenario; it may have made it easier for us to connect to anybody, anywhere in any corner of the world, but we should not forget that it also tends to cause addiction and people get so lost in communicating with their web world friends, and end up ignoring the real time people and friends around them.

Another concerning issue about the web world is that, it can conceal real identities of certain people; all thanks to certain applications which can modify and beautify your personality.

I would like share another quote, from Sydney. J. Harris, “The two words, ‘Information’, and ‘Communication’, are often used interchangeably, but they signify quite different things. Information is giving out; communication is getting through”.

Which signifies that technology should be used in the way that it is meant to be.
That would perhaps help us strike a balance between the two worlds, real and web. Without being less human…. πŸ™‚

But what do you think is the best thing to do?
